CILEx Regulation appoints University of Law as training and assessment provider for practice rights' alternative route

CILEx RegulationCILEx Regulation is delighted to announce that, following a competitive tender earlier this year, it has appointed the University of Law to administer its alternative route to authorising Chartered Legal Executives who would like to apply for additional practice rights.

The new route will enable experienced Chartered Legal Executives to obtain the right to practise one or more reserved areas of activity by completing an assessment of competence.

On successful completion, they will be able to make a short application to CILEx Regulation for authorisation and will also be awarded 20 credits towards a qualification at Level 7. For Chartered Legal Executives seeking to change areas of practice, or whose experience is more limited, a course of study is required and available through the University of Law to ensure that Chartered Legal Executives are appropriately prepared for the assessment.

Janine Griffiths-Baker, CEO, CILEx Regulation said:

‘We are really pleased to be working with the University of Law on this new route to enable established Chartered Legal Executives to gain practice rights. The University has an outstanding reputation for delivering high quality courses and assessments for law and legal practice and we look forward to working with them to design, develop, and implement a rigorous assessment process which complements the existing route to authorisation for additional practice rights. The alternative route has been developed based on feedback we have received relating to the existing portfolio-based application route.’

Professor Joanna Ballard, Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic Development at The University of Law, said: “We are delighted to win this tender and are looking forward to working collaboratively with CILEX Regulation to widen access to the legal profession generally. Most importantly, this is a great opportunity, as it provides an alternative route for CILEX Fellows to gain additional practice rights”.

We will be conducting a pilot phase with a limited number of applicants, before making our application to the LSB to finalise the rules of the scheme, which were agreed in principle in October 2020. We expect to make our final application to the LSB in early 2022, after which (subject to LSB approval) the route will be open to all Chartered Legal Executives who have more than 5 years of qualifying employment.
