In a recent webinar, I had the pleasure of interviewing Maria Mollica, the EU Commission’s Policy Officer, to discuss the upcoming EU Directive on Whistleblowing. Maria has been heavily involved in writing the new EU Whistleblowing Directive. The directive is expected to be in force by the end of 2021.

The SRA Handbook is being replaced by the SRA Standards and Regulations, which will be in force from November 2019. The focus of the reforms is on each legal professional being able to justify their actions in all work that they carry out.

While you have been on your summer holidays, the ICO and other European Data Protection Authorities have been keeping busy. Large and small firms have been investigated and fined for having insecure data file transfer and storing systems in place, making unlawful marketing calls and having inadequate, or in some cases, no GDPR training programmes in place.

From 4 June, law firms have a four-week window to submit their diversity data to the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Simply asking firms to collect diversity data will not impact demographics though.
