Conveyancers sanctioned for advice failures and registration oversight
Tuesday, 7 June 2016A conveyancer who failed to report important details to lender clients or follow their instructions in over 100 transactions has been fined £2,000 by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Meanwhile, an assistant solicitor who failed to secure a party’s interest in a property by registering a form at the Land Registry, has been fined £5,000 by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.

Solicitor who faked client care letters in “moment of madness” is struck off
Monday, 6 June 2016A solicitor who faked three client care letters and backdated them has been struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The SDT rejected Rafique Chowdhury’s claims that he acted “in a moment of madness” and was “regularising the files, not seeking to mislead anyone”.

Solicitor “unable to distinguish right from wrong” fined £10,000
Friday, 3 June 2016A sole practitioner who claimed to be “unable to distinguish right from wrong” has been fined £10,000 by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The tribunal said Claire Flood’s decision to transfer money from client accounts to pay her tax bill lacked “moral soundness, rectitude and a steady adherence to an ethical code”.

SRA bows to pressure and puts SQE on hold
Thursday, 2 June 2016The Solicitors Regulation Authority has bowed to fierce opposition from universities and law schools, and put its plans to introduce a new centralised assessment test for future solicitors on hold. The SRA’s board was due to decide on whether to go ahead at its meeting yesterday.

Dual-qualified barrister disbarred 10 years after being struck off as solicitor
Friday, 27 May 2016A barrister turned solicitor has been disbarred 10 years after he was struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. He did not tell the Bar about the decision and the Bar Standards Board only became aware of it last year when Lloyd Aneke applied for restoration to the roll of solicitors.

LSB and SRA oppose ban on professional McKenzie Friends

CLC seeks approval for solicitor-style indemnity scheme
Thursday, 26 May 2016The Council of Licensed Conveyancers has announced its intention to apply to the Legal Services Board to approve the introduction of a solicitor-style open market indemnity scheme. The move has triggered warnings that law firms may switch regulator from the Solicitors Regulation Authority to the CLC for the wrong reasons.

Barnett attacks “incredibly unfair” disciplinary regime for solicitors

Two more firms fined for SDLT avoidance schemes involvement
Friday, 20 May 2016The Solicitors Regulation Authority has fined two more law firms for advising on conveyancing transactions in which clients were party to schemes to avoid the payment of almost £8m in stamp duty land tax – for which the firms received £160,000 between them on top of their regular fees.

High Court rejects Barnett’s appeal against strike-off
Thursday, 19 May 2016The High Court has rejected an appeal by Richard Barnett, senior partner of collapsed conveyancing firm Barnetts, against his striking-off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. Mr Barnett, a former Law Society council member, had earlier failed in a bid to use costs he had paid to the SRA to fund an advocate.
