Complaints against other solicitors – legitimate reporting or cutting out the competition?

SRA’s competence statement wins high marks from solicitors

Nearly half of law firms secured cheaper indemnity cover, survey suggests
Friday, 17 October 2014Nearly half of law firms – 47% – secured cheaper indemnity insurance this year, a survey has suggested. Half of these obtained “significant” reductions. It also indicated a move by firms from unrated to rated insurers.

LeO calls for voluntary wills and probate ombudsman scheme

Headache for 1,000 firms with SRA poised to pull out of consumer credit work
Tuesday, 14 October 2014The Solicitors Regulation Authority has said it may have to stop regulating consumer credit work, such as debt collection, from next April. The regulator said it was aware that around 1,100 firms were involved in debt collection.

LSB attacks “arbitrary nature” of separate business rule

SRA to give law firms online tool to compare how diverse they are
Thursday, 9 October 2014Law firms will be able to check the diversity data of similar practices from next month, the Solicitors Regulation Authority has said. This will give them confidence to improve their own diversity, the head of its equality committee said.

Court of Appeal throws out QASA challenge
Tuesday, 7 October 2014The Court of Appeal today comprehensively dismissed four criminal law barristers’ challenge to the Legal Services Board’s approval of the Quality Assurance Scheme for Advocates. With the Master of the Rolls, Lord Dyson, giving the lead judgment, the court found that the scheme is lawful.

Tuesday deadline for uninsured law firms
Monday, 6 October 2014Firms that have not secured professional indemnity insurance have until tomorrow to notify the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Despite the abolition of the single indemnity renewal date last year, 1 October remained the deadline for more than 90% of law firms.

SRA fines firm £2,000 for £2.5m stamp duty avoidance schemes
Friday, 3 October 2014Leading Surrey firm Mundays has been rebuked and fined £2,000 by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for using stamp duty land tax avoidance schemes which saved clients over £2.5m.
