Solicitor rebuked for actions in retirement
Thursday, 13 August 2015A retired solicitor who was not clear about his status with a client, and provided reserved legal activities in the mistaken belief that he could do so, has accepted a rebuke and fine from the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Meanwhile, a solicitor convicted of bringing fraudulent PI claims has agreed to remove himself from the profession.

‘Panicked’ assistant solicitor fabricated counsel’s advice and expert reports
Tuesday, 11 August 2015An assistant solicitor has admitted to having “fabricated” advice from counsel, two expert reports and a series of letters on a medical negligence case because she felt “completely panicked and couldn’t see a way out”. The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal found that she “had not been thinking rationally at the time”.

GT Law “strongly denies any wrongdoing” over Sonae litigation
Friday, 7 August 2015GT Law, one of the two firms referred to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) by Mr Justice Jay over the Sonae litigation, has said that it “strongly denies any wrongdoing”. The SRA is considering “appropriate action”.

Business services giant blames SRA rules for scuppering ABS plans

SRA issues warning notice to criminal lawyers over legal aid boycott

The notice questions whether two key aspects of the protocol issued last week, effectively limiting the boycott to the Crown Court, are within the rules.

LSB approves relaxation of separate business rule
Friday, 24 July 2015The Legal Services Board has approved radical reforms of the separate business rule for solicitors, while noting that the changes “carry some risks to consumers”. Information on the difference between regulated and unregulated services is to be tested with consumers before the change comes into force.

Deregulation: Too much of a good thing?

The ‘legal regulators’ (this now includes the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) were keen to show just how much they agree in the three reports sent by the Legal Services Board to justice minister Shailesh Vara this week.
