Irish exemption to end as transfer scheme dispute continues without resolution
Tuesday, 31 August 2010There is no sign of a resolution to the Law Society of Ireland’s threat to judicially review the new Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS), meaning that from tomorrow Irish solicitors will no longer benefit from the automatic exemption that they do now. The judicial review started by the Law Society of Ireland has been stayed until 30 September.

Claims lodged over dishonesty and default by solicitors more than triples to £157m
Tuesday, 10 August 2010The value of compensation claims lodged as a result of dishonesty by solicitors has more than trebled to an astonishing £157 million, Legal Futures can reveal. The rise goes hand in hand with a continuing rise in the number of law firms closed down, which was 90 in the year to June, a rise of 22%.

Revealed: Law Society Council cut PC fee
Friday, 6 August 2010The Law Society Council decided to reduce the practising certificate (PC) fee requested by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) from £460 to £428, Legal Futures can reveal. But it does not impact the SRA’s budget and so is unlikely to have repercussions for relations between the Law Society and SRA.

Experience, not race, is key indicator of risk of regulatory action, says SRA report
Monday, 19 July 2010Experience is a greater predictor of whether solicitors will face regulatory action, not race, an in-depth study has concluded. However, research commissioned by the Solicitors Regulation Authority said that in some situations SRA processes compounded the level of disproportionality currently experienced by BME solicitors.

Pressure grows on SRA to find alternatives to “sledgehammer” of intervention

SRA publishes new regulatory regime for solicitors, including 46-page code of conduct
