SDT strikes off convicted solicitor at third time of asking
Friday, 15 April 2016The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal has struck off a solicitor convicted of a serious offence after he was allowed to continue in practice following two previous appearances before the tribunal for accounts rules breaches. It conceded that a warning given on his second SDT appearance had been ineffective.

Solicitor struck off for fabricating litigation and taking money from another client to pay ‘damages’
Tuesday, 12 April 2016A solicitor who pretended to be carrying out litigation, providing email updates on a case which did not exist, has been struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The tribunal said Stephanie Berry argued that her cognitive abilities had been impaired, but provided no evidence.

Solicitor who overcharged his clients “in the most despicable way” is struck off
Friday, 8 April 2016A solicitor who charged one client 50 times the estimate of £2,000 and another £100,000 in fees on a probate matter on which he could “recall no detail at all”, has been struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The SDT said Edgar Thomas had “blatantly abused his position of trust in the most despicable way”.

Directors of collapsed firm admit allowing client account to be used as banking facility
Monday, 21 March 2016Two directors of collapsed Devon law firm Recompense, Carolyn Hales and Irene Webb, have admitted allowing its client account to be used as a banking facility following agreements with the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Matthew Roddan, a third director of the firm, is on his way to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.

SDT strikes off solicitor who admitted he should never have qualified
Thursday, 10 March 2016A solicitor who admitted he should never have qualified in the first place has been struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal for misusing client money. Separately, it struck off a former sole practitioner who is serving four years in prison for fraud after stealing over £620,000.

Sole practitioner who overcharged client by 500% is struck off
Wednesday, 2 March 2016A sole practitioner who overcharged by 500% for private client work has been struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The SDT also found that Premji Naran Patel was “robbing Peter to pay Paul” by improperly moving money between different client accounts.

Solicitor who “exploited” criminal client is struck off
Monday, 29 February 2016A solicitor who “exploited” a criminal client who he met in a pub by acting as advocate without authorisation and demanding a £65,000 loan has been struck off. The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal heard that Stephen Paul Kettlewell failed to repay the loan.

SDT lifts suspension of solicitor so he can work as will-writer
Tuesday, 23 February 2016The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal has lifted the indefinite suspension of a solicitor who retrained as a will-writer after suffering a “major depressive illness”. The suspension prevented him from carrying out any work as a member of the Institute of Professional Willwriters.

Three Fladgate partners to face SDT over client account allegations
Tuesday, 23 February 2016Three partners at well-known London law firm Fladgate have been referred to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The 73-partner firm has said it is “fully supporting” the lawyers, who have all been accused by the Solicitors Regulation Authority of using the firm’s client account as a “banking facility”.

Solicitor who brought “cataclysm” upon himself is struck off
Thursday, 18 February 2016A sole practitioner who brought a “cataclysm” upon himself by failing to protect the interests of children when acting as a trustee, leading to them not receiving the legacies they should have done from two wills, has been struck off and ordered to pay £65,000 in costs. The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal said Timothy John Wilkinson “blamed everyone else”.
