We need full separation from Law Society to police money laundering, SRA tells Treasury
Tuesday, 7 June 2016The Solicitors Regulation Authority has opened a second front in its campaign for full separation from the Law Society by appealing to the Treasury to intervene over the issue of money laundering. The Ministry of Justice is expected to reveal its plans on separation after the EU referendum.

Solicitor who faked client care letters in “moment of madness” is struck off
Monday, 6 June 2016A solicitor who faked three client care letters and backdated them has been struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The SDT rejected Rafique Chowdhury’s claims that he acted “in a moment of madness” and was “regularising the files, not seeking to mislead anyone”.

Solicitor “unable to distinguish right from wrong” fined £10,000
Friday, 3 June 2016A sole practitioner who claimed to be “unable to distinguish right from wrong” has been fined £10,000 by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The tribunal said Claire Flood’s decision to transfer money from client accounts to pay her tax bill lacked “moral soundness, rectitude and a steady adherence to an ethical code”.

High Court rejects appeal from solicitor who “neither thought nor cared about” the rules
Tuesday, 31 May 2016The High Court has rejected an appeal against striking off from a solicitor who “neither thought nor cared about” the rules governing his profession. Robert Scott argued that because he had been found not to have acted dishonestly, he could not be found to have lacked integrity.

Barnett attacks “incredibly unfair” disciplinary regime for solicitors

High Court rejects Barnett’s appeal against strike-off
Thursday, 19 May 2016The High Court has rejected an appeal by Richard Barnett, senior partner of collapsed conveyancing firm Barnetts, against his striking-off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. Mr Barnett, a former Law Society council member, had earlier failed in a bid to use costs he had paid to the SRA to fund an advocate.

Sole practitioner struck off for “masterclass in failure to comply”

SDT allows solicitor who overturned strike-off to return to practice

Tribunal “appalled and dismayed” by SRA’s approach to prosecuting solicitor
Friday, 6 May 2016The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal has slammed a prosecution by the Solicitors Regulation Authority in the strongest terms, saying it was “appalled and dismayed” that the regulator had asked it to “rubber stamp” a deal which saw charges of dishonesty dropped at the last minute after the solicitor accused made certain admissions.

Solicitor who failed to provide breath test is fined
Thursday, 5 May 2016A solicitor convicted of failing to provide police with a breath test has been fined £2,500 by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. Arguing that there was no case to answer, Olufemi Olujinmi said regulation should have a “human face” and the incident should be treated as a “moment of madness”.
