Solicitor receives suspended sentence for failure to co-operate with Legal Ombudsman
Friday, 24 February 2012The High Court has handed a suspended four-month sentence to a solicitor who failed to co-operate with an investigation by the Legal Ombudsman. The judge only held back from committing him to prison because of his personal mitigation.

Struck-off lawyer jailed for £8m mortgage fraud

SRA rejects calls to curb publication of regulatory decisions against solicitors

First ABS wannabes begin SRA application process
Wednesday, 4 January 2012More than 10 prospective alternative business structures completed the first stage of the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s application process on the first day, the authority has revealed. SRA figures show that it will spend a minimum of three days considering applications.

SRA: BME solicitors face increasingly disproportionate number of conduct complaints
Friday, 11 November 2011The proportion of black and minority ethnic solicitors (BME) named in complaints about conduct to the Solicitors Regulation Authority surged last year, the third year in which the figure has risen. BME solicitors comprised 27% of all conduct complaints.

Law firm that sent intimidating letters to alleged file-sharers accepts SRA reprimand
Thursday, 3 November 2011A law firm has escaped with a reprimand after being found by the Solicitors Regulation Authority to have breached professional practice rules in connection with intimidating letters sent to alleged Internet file sharers. It is the third firm to face SRA action over this.

Record number of solicitors struck off or suspended
Tuesday, 25 October 2011A record number of solicitors have been either struck off or suspended, the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal has revealed. However, the number of solicitors appearing before the tribunal has dropped sharply, possibly because of the SRA’s new powers to issue sanctions itself.

Government rejects profession’s call for convictions check on all ABS partners
Thursday, 20 October 2011The government has rejected a call from the legal profession that partners in alternative business structures should have to disclose all convictions and cautions, even if spent. But the SRA is still on track to start licensing ABSs in early 2012.

Solicitor takes campaign to doors of SRA after winning first round of court battle

It follows the SRA’s failed attempt to strike out his High Court action seeking damages.

ARP firms shut down as SRA warns of uninsured practices continuing to operate
