Exclusive: government rejects SRA bid to increase fining power from £2,000 to £250m
Wednesday, 31 October 2012The government has rejected the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s bid to increase the amount it can fine law firms from £2,000 to £250m, Legal Futures can reveal. The SRA had wanted its powers to penalise ‘traditional’ firms to match those it already has for ABSs.

High Court rejects appeal of solicitor struck off in his absence
Monday, 29 October 2012A solicitor who was struck off in his absence has had his challenge to the decision thrown out by the High Court. Mr Justice Foskett warned that those who fail to attend Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal hearings do so at their own peril.

High Court throws out racial discrimination challenge to SDT ruling
Wednesday, 17 October 2012The High Court has thrown out a solicitor’s challenge to the decision to suspend him, which he argued was tainted by racial discrimination. Mr Justice Haddon-Cave said that “no scintilla of discrimination of any kind is detectible”.

High Court backs SRA bid to increase suspension of solicitor to a strike-off
Tuesday, 16 October 2012The High Court has struck off a solicitor who was only suspended by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The Solicitors Regulation Authority appealed the February 2011 decision to suspend him for three years, even though he was found him to have acted dishonestly.

LSB’s “open debate” on cost of regulation throws spotlight on practising fee split

Cracking the whip

Good news day for solicitors: both strike-offs and negligence claims fall
Monday, 9 July 2012The number of solicitors struck off in the year to March dropped by 43%, while the number of negligence claims against solicitors reaching the High Court has also fallen, a flurry of new figures have shown.

An open and shut case
Friday, 6 July 2012I’m feeling a rant coming on, so bear with me. In the two-plus years of this website, I have had cause to complain about the lack of transparency of many of the bodies involved in the regulation of the legal profession. I have ample cause to do so again, unfortunately. First up is the Legal Services Board, whose approach to the publication of papers and to holding open board meetings is frustrating to say the least. Well, yesterday I got the limited satisfaction of knowing that it’s not just me.
