SRA and claims regulator dismiss Law Society speculation of referral fee ban “difficulty”
Wednesday, 9 January 2013The Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Claims Management Regulator have dismissed a Law Society suggestion that they will not be ready to implement the referral fee ban on 1 April. The society said there was a possibility the pair “may have some difficulty” in doing so.

Conveyancers reject Law Society call for referral fee ban
Monday, 10 December 2012The Council for Licensed Conveyancers has rejected Law Society calls for a ban on referral fees in conveyancing, although it is proposing to increase the disclosure requirements on firms. It found “little evidence of significant detriment” to consumers.

New solicitor marketing network to spend £3m as Thompsons eyes trade union partnerships
Friday, 7 December 2012A new national marketing network of solicitors specialising in personal injury claims will be launched in the New Year with funding to spend more than £3m a year on advertising as firms come to terms with the upcoming ban on referral fees. Meanwhile new ABS Thompsons hinted at possible alliances with trade unions.

Government will not set limit on payments permitted under referral fee ban exception
Friday, 23 November 2012The government is not currently planning to set an upper limit on payments that are exempt from the referral fee ban as “consideration for services”, it has announced. The news came as the Claims Management Regulator issued preliminary guidance on how it will approach the ban.

Exclusive: government rejects SRA bid to increase fining power from £2,000 to £250m
Wednesday, 31 October 2012The government has rejected the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s bid to increase the amount it can fine law firms from £2,000 to £250m, Legal Futures can reveal. The SRA had wanted its powers to penalise ‘traditional’ firms to match those it already has for ABSs.

Solicitors putting barristers under increasing pressure to pay referral fees, Bar Council warns
Tuesday, 30 October 2012Solicitors are putting barristers under “increasing pressure” to enter into referral fee agreements, to the detriment of clients, the public interest and the junior Bar, the Bar Council has claimed. It also warned that providing junior barristers at discounted rates can amount to a referral fee.
