“Thousands of jobs at risk” from PI reforms, economists warn

Judiciary issues warning to government over impact of PI reform
Thursday, 19 January 2017The judiciary has weighed into the debate about raising the small claims limit for personal injury by expressing “serious dismay” about the lack of consultation with judges and warning the government that any savings are likely to be outweighed by the significant extra burden litigants in person will put on the small claims court.

PI claimants can still use lawyers for small claims work, says justice minister
Thursday, 12 January 2017The government yesterday gave little indication that it was prepared to yield over its proposed reforms to personal injury, arguing that raising the small claims limit would not stop claimants using lawyers. Justice minister Sir Oliver Heald questioned whether a £40 cut in premiums should be sacrificed to uphold a 25-year-old limit that operates “in the interests of solicitors”.

Judge overturns SDT decision to clear Axiom fund solicitors

Government forecast on impact of PI reforms “skewed against lawyers”, say economists
Monday, 9 January 2017The government’s own assessment of the impact of its planned personal injury reforms “makes the implicit assumption that solicitors, and the civil justice system as a whole, produce no benefits to society”, according to independent economists. They said the reforms would benefit insurers at the expense of consumers and taxpayers.
