Director of CMC that received – but didn’t pay – record fine accepts ban
Wednesday, 15 March 2017The director of the claims management company that was the subject of the largest-ever fine handed out by the Claims Management Regulator has accepted a ban from being a director for the next nine years. Meanwhile, the Information Commissioner has executed a search warrant while investigating the illegal access of customer details from a major car repair company.

National Accident Helpline eyes ABS joint ventures in response to PI reforms
Tuesday, 14 March 2017National Accident Helpline is set to invest in personal injury cases for the first time through alternative business structures, it revealed today. It said the government’s PI reforms would catch “less than” 30% of the enquiries it generated for firms but still meant major changes were needed.

ABS hopes to build up consumer brand covering 14 types of claim

Firm that made 22m automated marketing calls in PI and other fields fined £270,000
Friday, 10 March 2017A company that made 22 million nuisance calls has been fined £270,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office, one of the highest penalties it has ever levied for such an offence. It comes amid disappointment that this week’s Budget contained no mention of a ban on cold-calling in personal injury.

MPs warn government that PI reforms “risk injustice for genuine claimants”
Thursday, 2 March 2017The government’s personal injury reforms appears more likely to put genuine claimants at the risk of injustice than reduce the number of fraudulent claims, an influential group of MPs has warned. The MPs also said there was “little direct evidence that tackling fraud has reduced premiums”.

More dire results for Slater & Gordon as it admits survival depends on lenders

Government presses ahead with whiplash reforms – but gives ground on other PI claims
Thursday, 23 February 2017The small claims limit will rise to £5,000 for whiplash cases, but only £2,000 for other personal injury claims, the Ministry of Justice announced today in a bid “to crack down on the compensation culture epidemic” – less than seven weeks after its consultation closed. There will be a fixed tariff to cap whiplash compensation pay-outs.
