Second ABS for National Accident Helpline after deal with national law firm
Friday, 13 October 2017NAHL, the marketing business that owns National Accident Helpline, has created its second alternative business structure (ABS) licence in partnership with national law firm Lyons Davidson. The ABS will trade under the name National Law Partners and it is expected to begin operating in November 2017.

Solicitor who received referral fees while on employment benefit struck off
Monday, 9 October 2017A personal injury solicitor convicted of benefit fraud after being paid for case referrals while receiving employment support allowance has been struck off. He was convicted of dishonestly failing to promptly notify the Department for Work and Pensions of a change in circumstances which he knew would affect his entitlement to benefit.

Conservative MPs fire warning shots over PI to both government and SRA
Wednesday, 4 October 2017Conservative MPs yesterday cautioned the government against over-reacting to the abuses in the personal injury market by taking away the right of genuinely injured people to sue. Bob Neill, the chairman of the justice select committee, also warned the SRA that it needed to focus more on rogue PI solicitors than arguments with the Law Society over independent regulation.

Small claims expert: personal injury tariff scheme would force me to leave market

CMCs to face re-authorisation under new regulatory regime as SRA defends activity over cold-calling
Tuesday, 26 September 2017Claims management companies will have to be authorised afresh by the Financial Conduct Authority before they can operate under the new regime, it has emerged. The FCA would set the bar higher when authorising CMCs than it had been set 10 years ago when the MoJ started regulating them, the current regulator said.

Solicitors “failing to vet” holiday sickness cases for cold calling and fraud

Richard Conroy, a food scientist and founder of sickholiday.com, told solicitors: “You can do a far better job of vetting the cases coming to you.”

“All to play for” on Civil Liability Bill, personal injury leaders say
Wednesday, 20 September 2017Leading personal injury lawyers told yesterday’s PI Futures conference that there is “all to play for” on the Civil Liability Bill as a “nervous” governments seeks to avoid a damaging parliamentary defeat. Delegates were also urged to write to the Law Society to demand it take more action, and to MPs about the impact on access to justice.

NAHL reports expected profits dip as it prepares for PI reforms
Tuesday, 19 September 2017NAHL plc, the marketing and services business that owns National Accident Helpline, has announced a small dip in revenue and profits for the first half of 2017. The company warned investors last year that work to reshape its personal injury offering, in light of the upcoming government reforms, would lead to a temporary dampening of cash generation and profits.

SRA issues holiday sickness claims warning as it probes 31 firms for referral ban breaches
Thursday, 7 September 2017The Solicitors Regulation Authority has warned law firms that they are not doing enough to weed out “false or dubious” holiday sickness claims and that some are engaging in shady practices like encouraging clients to delete evidence. It is also investigating 31 firms over potentially improper referral arrangements with claims management companies.
