Firms have “heads in the sand” over compliance officers

OFR still set for 6 October, while ABSs could yet happen before end of the year
Tuesday, 26 July 2011Outcomes-focused regulation will go ahead on 6 October even though it is unlikely that the Solicitors Regulation Authority will be able to start licensing alternative business structures “much before the end of the year”, chief executive Antony Townsend has confirmed.

BME solicitors still face disproportionate amount of regulatory action, SRA admits
Friday, 15 July 2011Black and minority ethnic solicitors continue to figure in a disproportionate number of regulatory actions, the Solicitors Regulation Authority has admitted. It is occuring across key areas such as interventions, referrals to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal and the imposition of practising certificate conditions.

SRA receives green light to license ABSs
Thursday, 16 June 2011The Legal Services Board is to recommend to the Lord Chancellor that the Law Society – through the Solicitors Regulation Authority – become an alternative business structure licensing authority. However, there has been a disagreement over the separate business rule.

Consumer watchdog gives SRA’s ABS application green light – with reservations

The Legal Services Consumer Panel expressed disappointment that some recommendations it made during consultations were not adopted.

Countdown to outcomes-focused regulation begins as SRA publishes Handbook

The Handbook – delivered on schedule and exactly six months before it is due to come into force – introduces the profession to outcomes-focused regulation.

SRA approves new conflicts rule as it prepares to publish 563-page Handbook
Monday, 21 March 2011The Solicitors Regulation Authority has substantially reworked its new rule on conflicts of interest, which will come into force later this year. Legal Futures has had advanced sight of the 563-page SRA Handbook ahead of its publication on 6 April, although the new Code of Conduct is just 54 pages.

Plant in warning to Law Society as ABS application and new handbook approved
