America poised to embrace LDPs – but go no further towards ABSs
Monday, 5 December 2011America last week moved a major step closer to introducing a version of legal disciplinary practices (LDPs), while ruling out multi-disciplinary practices. The American Bar Association has noted the “remarkable” growth of LDPs in England and Wales.

Accountants' ABS ambitions hit by new EU audit rules
Thursday, 1 December 2011The ambitions of larger firms of accountants to offer legal services have become more complicated after the European Commission announced plans to stop auditors offering non-audit services. If it becomes law, the move will lead to the break-up of the ‘big four’ accountants into audit and consultancy businesses.

Lawyers and accountants – happy marriage or divorce in the making?

German lawyers call on Americans to join international stand against ABSs
Tuesday, 30 August 2011The German Bar has called on its American counterpart to form an international coalition against alternative business structures. The news comes as the American Bar Association prepares to publish a proposed rule change that would allow minority non-lawyer ownership of law firms, with the New York courts set to rule on the issue too.

Law Society sets down red lines marking out limits of its support for ABSs
Wednesday, 3 November 2010The Law Society has begun laying down the red lines beyond which it will not be able to support alternative business structures (ABSs), Legal Futures can reveal. The society’s regulatory affairs board has highlighted a variety of issues that it expects to see addressed if it is to judge the arrangements for ABSs satisfactory, including effective controls on the fitness to own of prospective external owners.
