Licensed conveyancers unveil rival to CQS amid warning that lenders are becoming backdoor regulators
Thursday, 24 November 2011The body representing licensed conveyancers has launched a quality assurance scheme uniquely linked to their regulator in a bid to help detect mortgage fraud. The move by the Society of Licensed Conveyancers goes significantly further than the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme.

Legal Services Consumer Panel: still no evidence to justify referral fee ban
Tuesday, 11 October 2011The Legal Services Consumer Panel is standing by its recommendation to retain referral fees, saying it has seen no new evidence of consumer detriment to back a ban. Meanwhile, the Bar Council says its legal advice shows referral fees fall foul of the Bribery Act.

SRA unveils strategy to “educate, engage with and empower” consumers
Monday, 10 October 2011The Solicitors Regulation Authority has launched a new strategy aimed at ensuring the interests of consumers “sit at the heart of the legal services marketplace”. It is also working on a project to determine whether the legal profession is meeting the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing.

Bid to shut down will-writing companies as LSB launches regulation evidence call

The news comes as the Legal Services Board issues a call for evidence on whether to make will-writing, the entire probate process and estate administration reserved legal activities.

CLC hits back at Lord Chief Justice and Law Society opposition to new rights
Friday, 5 August 2011The Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) has hit back at opposition from the Lord Chief Justice and the Law Society to its application to grant rights to conduct advocacy and litigation. The Legal Services Board is currently considering the CLC’s application, and as one of its statutory consultees, the Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge has expressed his total opposition.

The lessons of will-writer regulation
Friday, 15 July 2011Yesterday’s report on will-writing by the Legal Services Consumer Panel was more proof, if any were needed, that the Legal Services Act 2007 is anything but a deregulatory measure. Even the deregulation of business structures is hedged by a raft of new regulation. There are several points worth picking out of the report. First, it emphasises once more how critical reserved legal activities are to the future shape of the legal market.

Institute of Professional Willwriters throws hat into ring to regulate wills market
Thursday, 14 July 2011The Institute of Professional Willwriters (IPW) will apply to become a regulator of will-writing services should the Legal Services Board decide to make it a reserved activity, it has confirmed. It called on the board and the government “to take prompt action to implement the recommendations” of today’s consumer panel report.
