Cost of borrowing may rise if law firms abandon client accounts, regulators warn
Tuesday, 21 July 2015Banks may charge law firms more for borrowing if they abandon their client accounts, the legal regulators have warned. A report submitted to justice minister Shailesh Vara highlighted both the dangers and benefits of allowing choice on whether to handle client money directly.

Lack of clarity on fees causes one in four complaints, major LeO survey finds
Wednesday, 20 May 2015More than a quarter (26%) of complaints to the Legal Ombudsman are triggered by lack of clarity on fees, a major internal survey has found. Family law has emerged as the biggest offender, followed by wills and litigation.

BSB promises “lighter weight and less costly” regulation as it applies to licence ABSs
Monday, 11 May 2015The Bar Standards Board has promised to provide “lighter weight and less costly” regulation than its rivals as it applied to become a regulator of alternative business structures last week. “Many potential entities” wanted to “exploit the greater flexibility” that operating as an ABS could provide.

Regulation round-up: consumers to have 12 months to complain to LeO, plus SRA, LSB and IPS news
Tuesday, 24 March 2015The six-month time limit for clients to complain to the Legal Ombudsman (LeO) is to be doubled from this summer, it has announced. The new time limit, which takes effect from 9 July, runs from the date of receiving a final response from the lawyer.

No evidence of regulatory risks from online divorce, research finds
Thursday, 19 March 2015There is no evidence of online divorce leading to regulatory risks, joint research by the Legal Services Board and Legal Services Consumer Panel has found. The report found high levels of satisfaction with face-to-face legal advice (79%) and online (83%).
