Lack of “strong brands” to advise small businesses, says Rocket Lawyer chief

Mr Edwards said innovation was “not happening as much as it should be” in the legal market.

Police complaints commissioner to become Chief Legal Ombudsman as scale of task becomes clear
Friday, 6 November 2015Kathryn Stone, a police complaints commissioner, is to become chief ombudsman at the Legal Ombudsman in January next year. The appointment comes at a time when new figures put LeO under further pressure from the Legal Services Board over deteriorating performance against its targets.

Lawyers still not cost-effective, small businesses tell biggest ever survey
Thursday, 22 October 2015Only 13% of small businesses believe lawyers “provide a cost-effective means to resolve legal issues”, the biggest survey of its kind has found. The survey also found that small businesses were more likely to use accountants in solving legal problems than solicitors.

“Humble” SRA decides to grade itself as “undertaking improvement”
Thursday, 22 October 2015The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has decided not to grade itself as ‘good’ or ‘satisfactory’ in a self-assessment exercise for the Legal Services Board. Chief executive Paul Philip told a board meeting yesterday that the SRA had chosen to respond “in a humble way” rather than stressing its achievements.

LSB research: Firms see little value in what they spend on regulation
Wednesday, 16 September 2015Regulation accounts for between 15% and 23% of the costs of law firms, money they would generally not bother spending if they were not required to, an indicative study by the Legal Services Board has found. However, the opposite was the case for lawyers practising as individuals.

Legal Services Board approves relaxation of rules on accountants’ reports

Our turn to say sorry: Legal Ombudsman apologises over ADR change of heart

LSB approves relaxation of separate business rule
Friday, 24 July 2015The Legal Services Board has approved radical reforms of the separate business rule for solicitors, while noting that the changes “carry some risks to consumers”. Information on the difference between regulated and unregulated services is to be tested with consumers before the change comes into force.

Legal regulators urge government to ease burdens on ABSs
Tuesday, 21 July 2015Legal regulators have called on the government to make a series of changes to the Legal Services Act that will make it easier to approve and regulate alternative business structures. The move is part of the first output from joint work being done by all of the legal regulators to identify opportunities for deregulation.

LSB hunts for second chief executive in a year after Moriarty quits
Tuesday, 21 July 2015Legal Services Board chief executive Richard Moriarty is to leave the post next February after just a year in the role, it was announced today. Mr Moriarty is returning to the Civil Aviation Authority as its deputy chief executive and group director for consumers and markets.
