Micro-managing LSB "risks independence of profession"

LSB issues Bar Standards Board with warning notice over cab-rank rule changes

The drama taking place under our noses
Wednesday, 11 January 2012The Law Society, in my experience, is rather good at making things complicated. For evidence, look no further than the new internal governance arrangements which received lukewarm support from the Legal Services Board shortly before Christmas. This may seem like a dry and esoteric issue to most. Virtually everyone, in fact, which is why pretty much nobody else seems to write about or comment on it. They are wrong.

LSB puts Law Society on report after SRA complains about independence threat

Fine for first solicitor taken to court by LeO – but judge says prison may be right for others
Tuesday, 15 November 2011A solicitor has for the first time been fined by the High Court for failing to co-operate with an investigation by the Legal Ombudsman. The High Court used the case to stress that such failures could also lead to immediate imprisonment.

Ombudsman should have jurisdiction over will-writers and not-for-profits, says report

SRA highlights investor scrutiny as it prepares to start licensing ABSs in “early 2012”

Ombudsman takes solicitors to court for failing to comply with orders
Wednesday, 17 August 2011The Legal Ombudsman has brought its first enforcement actions in the county court after two law firms failed to comply with its orders. In the first case, LeO had told the solicitors to pay £2,650 compensation to their client for paying money to a third party without authorisation.
