… as Law Society calls on government to slash the LSB’s budget to stop it overstepping the mark
Tuesday, 10 April 2012The Legal Services Board should have its budget slashed so as to rein in its ambitions to move beyond a supervisory role, the Law Society has claimed. However, the SRA, CILEx and Council for Licensed Conveyancers have been more measured in their criticism.

Putting the LSB back in its box
Wednesday, 4 April 2012If we are to judge the success of a regulator by the degree to which it really annoys those it regulates, then the Legal Services Board (LSB) has done an absolutely bang-up job these past three years. It is just over 12 months since I first blogged about whispers questioning the long-term need for the LSB once independent regulation, the Legal Ombudsman and alternative business structures were all up and running. Well, they are whispers no more.

Set the date to scrap the LSB, Bar regulator tells government
Wednesday, 4 April 2012The “end is in sight” for the Legal Services Board (LSB) and it can be abolished in about three years’ time, the Bar’s regulator has told the government. The Bar Council stopped short of this, but said the LSB should be reined in.

Cost of legal services continues to rise – as does number of people going it alone without lawyers
Wednesday, 4 April 2012The continued rise in the cost of legal services at a time when consumer wealth has fallen could be putting people off seeking legal advice, new research has suggested. The Legal Services Board report also found indications of falling quality.

Don’t recruit partners without running them past us first, SRA warns firms
Monday, 2 April 2012Law firms recruiting partners must now seek the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s approval prior to appointment, it has confirmed. However, it is still unable to confirm when the process will begin for firms to nominate their COLP and COFA.

Exclusive: SRA bids to increase its power to fine law firms – from £2,000 to £250m
Friday, 30 March 2012The Solicitors Regulation Authority’s is planning to increase its power to fine law firms from £2,000 to £250m, and to £50m for individuals, Legal Futures can reveal. The Law Society has described the move as “misconceived”.

In-house lawyers face ABS dilemma
Friday, 30 March 2012Organisations whose in-house solicitors provide reserved legal activities to people other than their employer – such as insurers, associations and local authorities – will have to decide for themselves whether by law they need to become alternative business structures, according to the SRA.

SRA agrees third version of Handbook in six months – with another one set for June
Friday, 2 March 2012The board of the Solicitors Regulation Authority this week approved the third edition of the SRA Handbook since it went live last October, with a fourth one due before the end of June. The SRA said it recognised the disruption this would cause but argued that the updates have been unavoidable.

Government to consider tightening up referral fee ban and regulating third-party funding
Thursday, 2 February 2012The government is to consider tightening up the ban on referral fees in personal injury and also introducing statutory regulation of third-party litigation funding, it confirmed yesterday. It also clarified whether payments can be made for solicitor-to-solicitor referrals under the ban.
