Version 4 of Handbook goes live as SRA promises no further COLP/COFA delay
Friday, 22 June 2012The fourth edition of the SRA Handbook in less than 10 months was published yesterday. It includes the delay in the introduction of the compliance officer regime, and the SRA has guaranteed that there will be no further hold-ups.

Edmonds: LSB is interventionist and proud of it

LSB urges SRA to speed up review of “unsustainable” in-house lawyer rules

Fighting the good fight, if not always winning
Thursday, 24 May 2012The last week has seen both a victory and a defeat for lawyer lobbying, and perhaps the most fearsome legal lobbying machine – the Bar – crank into action. The victory came in the surprise climbdown by HSBC over its restricted conveyancing panel. A global banking giant felled by a campaign spearheaded by the Law Society but with strong support from the likes of the Bold Group. It was pursued at a national level, with coverage in several national newspapers, and also at a local level, with solicitors talking to their estate agent contacts.

LSB calls on government to back bid for huge increase in SRA’s fining powers
Thursday, 10 May 2012The Legal Services Board has called on the government to support a bid by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for a massive increase in the amount it can fine law firms. The SRA wants to increase its power to fine law firms from £2,000 to £250m, and to £50m for individuals.

SRA hanging in-house lawyers out to dry with unclear ABS rule, Law Society claims
