And a story on it in yesterday’s Daily Mail gave a preview of what this could all mean in practice. “Shaming the rogue lawyers: list of Britain’s worst solicitors to be published for the first time,” ran the headline.

Ombudsman hints at giving users of online legal services access to redress

Edmonds comes out fighting in defence of LSB

LSB to investigate regulating all "general legal advice"
Monday, 23 April 2012The Legal Services Board is to examine whether ‘general legal advice’ given to consumers should be regulated, it announced today, but has rejected the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s call for all solicitor-type services to be reserved.

LeO cuts £3m off budget as income from case fees collapses
Tuesday, 3 April 2012The Legal Ombudsman is to reduce its budget by 14% – amounting to nearly £3m – over the next year, it has revealed. It is in large part accounted for by a far lower receipt of case fees last year than had been expected.

MPs "worried" about confusion over regulation and quality of legal services
Thursday, 29 March 2012The vast majority of MPs are concerned that their constituents may not understand what legal services are regulated and which are not, new research has found. It also identified concern that there is insufficient redress for consumers of legal services.

Legal Ombudsman: let us accept complaints from prospective clients and third parties
Monday, 26 March 2012Prospective clients and third parties will be able to make complaints about lawyers, if plans unveiled by the Legal Ombudsman today go ahead. The one-year time limit for making complaints to LeO will also be extended, as will the level of compensation it can award.

Law Society tells LSB: keep your tanks off our lawn
Friday, 16 March 2012The Law Society has warned the Legal Services Board that it is overstepping its role as an oversight body by trying to become a market regulator. The society said the board plans for the future suggested an “inappropriately proactive approach for an oversight regulator”.

Ombudsman tells lawyers: sort out your pricing or risk losing work to "nakedly commercial enterprises"
Tuesday, 6 March 2012Lawyers must provide clearer pricing information to their clients or risk losing out to new entrants to the market, the Legal Ombudsman (LeO) has warned. LeO today issued a report on the problems issues around cost causes consumers, accounting for up to a quarter of all of its investigations.

Government targets legal services regulation in ‘Red Tape Challenge’
Wednesday, 29 February 2012The government is planning to slash unnecessary red tape around the regulation of legal services, it has emerged. The Red Tape Challenge – a government-wide initiative to cut the 21,000 regulations currently in force in the UK – will spotlight legal services in June.
