MPs reject Straw’s bid to back up referral fee ban with criminal sanctions

CSC threatens government with judicial review over referral fee ban

Legal aid bill timetable on track as judge warns of return to the costs war
Friday, 21 October 2011The legal aid and Jackson reforms should come into force in October 2012, justice minister Jonathan Djanogly confirmed yesterday, as Labour launched a bid to make paying a referral fee a criminal offence punishable by up to six months in prison.

Dowler family urges Cameron to scrap Jackson reforms
Friday, 23 September 2011The family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler has called on Prime Minister David Cameron to scrap the Jackson reforms, saying they were only able to sue the News of the World over the phone-hacking scandal because they did not have to pay for after-the-event insurance.

Government holds firm against Jackson changes

It has also rejected the judge’s recent call to fund expert reports in clinical negligence cases with legal aid.

Retain legal aid for clinical negligence, urges Jackson – with swipe at the Law Society

Big retailers join Jackson lobbying group as MPs resume scrutiny of reforms

“Despondent” Bar could become enclave of the better-off once more, warns Lodder
Wednesday, 31 August 2011Criminal law barristers have reached a new low of despondency, the chairman of the Bar Council has told Lord Chancellor Ken Clarke. Peter Lodder QC warned that the government’s legal aid cuts could also see the Bar return to “a professional enclave for the better-off” as students are discouraged by mounting debts.

CJC warns of MoJ threat to access to justice as Jackson implementation role is revealed
Thursday, 4 August 2011Government plans to reduce the amount of litigation in the county courts by introducing mandatory pre-action directions will undermine the constitutional principle of access to the courts, the Civil Justice Council (CJC) has warned. The news comes as the CJC’s role in implementing the Jackson reforms has also been revealed.
