The problem with paralegals
Friday, 16 July 2010Monty Python fans will recall the scene from ‘Life of Brian’ involving the People’s Front of Judea, the Judean People’s Front and the Judean Popular People’s Front. Well, it sometimes seems that this inspired those jockeying for position in the paralegal world. We have the National Association of Licensed Paralegals, the Institute of Paralegals and the Society of Specialist Paralegals. Now we have the Law Society potentially moving into their market by investigating whether there is any scope for it to develop a paralegal qualification.

LSB sets out plans for levying its £25m running costs for 2010/11 on profession

A fond farewell
Thursday, 8 July 2010So farewell (almost), Zahida Manzoor. Her final annual report after more than seven years as Legal Services Ombudsman is understandably reflective ahead of the post’s abolition on 6 October when the Office for Legal Complaints (OLC)/Legal Ombudsman (no, we’re not sure which to call it either) opens for business. Ms Manzoor deserves a chance to bask in the glow of her achievements.

Law Society reassures firms over Quinn, while outlining fallout from insolvent insurers
Thursday, 27 May 2010The Law Society has issued further reassurance to the 2,911 law firms insured by Quinn that there is no reason to fear for the strength of their cover. It came on the same day as the society also issued a practice note on the position if a qualifying insurer goes insolvent.

SRA unveils roadmap to outcomes-focused regulation, but Law Society has “concerns”
Friday, 30 April 2010The Solicitors Regulation Authority today recognised that it has “much to do” to build the confidence of law firms in their regulator if it is to succeed in delivering outcomes-focused regulation (OFR). The launch today of its consultation on how OFR will work also came with words of caution from the Law Society about the implementation timetable, cost and regulatory burden that may result.

Bad points are a “good reason” to terminate retainer, says Court of Appeal
