Law Society calls in Equality Commission to bring indemnity insurers into line
Friday, 24 September 2010The Equality and Human Rights Commission is host a meeting between the Law Society, black and minority ethnic solicitors, and professional indemnity insurers in a bid to agree a plan of action to improve insurers’ equality practices. It was called in after the Law Society judged insurers’ response to examples of alleged discrimination in the 2009 renewal process to be “wholly inadequate”.

Law Society “reserves right to go to court” over LSB bid to force change in SRA board
Tuesday, 21 September 2010The Law Society has rejected Legal Services Board (LSB) calls to introduce a lay majority on the board of the Solicitors Regulation Authority before 2013, Legal Futures can reveal. The move is likely to lead to a stand-off with the LSB that could end up in the courts, with the society warning that it reserves the right to challenge any formal action which the LSB takes against it as a result.

CML and Law Society committee look at making title insurance compulsory
Monday, 13 September 2010The Council of Mortgage Lenders is investigating the case for making title insurance compulsory for all conveyancing transactions, it has emerged, as a Law Society committee said it should be looked at as a way to reduce solicitors’ professional indemnity insurance premiums.

Revealed: Law Society considers aptitude test to reduce numbers on LPC
Thursday, 9 September 2010The Law Society is considering introducing an aptitude test for entry onto the legal practice course that will reduce student numbers, Legal Futures can reveal. Other initiatives being examined are a “warts and all” guide to qualification as a solicitor and incentives for firms to provide training contracts.

Indemnity insurer extends quote period to 10 days, but rejects Law Society demand for 21

Revealed: Law Society Council cut PC fee
Friday, 6 August 2010The Law Society Council decided to reduce the practising certificate (PC) fee requested by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) from £460 to £428, Legal Futures can reveal. But it does not impact the SRA’s budget and so is unlikely to have repercussions for relations between the Law Society and SRA.

QC mark and Law Society panels under scrutiny for help they give consumers

Solicitors to pay £5m to close Legal Complaints Service
Tuesday, 20 July 2010The Law Society has set aside £5 million to pay for the closure of the Legal Complaints Service (LCS), its 2009 annual report has revealed. The report also revealed that the society spent £600,000 in legal fees on its unsuccessful attempt under TUPE to force the new Office for Legal Complaints to take on LCS staff.
