Appeals decision threatens prospect of SRA becoming an ABS licensing authority
Sunday, 27 February 2011The Legal Services Board is pressing ahead with plans to make the new regulatory chamber of the First-tier Tribunal the sole venue for appeals against decisions made over ABSs, despite strong objections from solicitors. It is a move that could damage hopes that the Law Society council will next month approve the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s application to become an ABS licensing authority.

Revealed: nearly 350 firms apply for Conveyancing Quality Scheme
Wednesday, 23 February 2011Some 342 law firms have applied to join the Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) since it opened last month, the Law Society has revealed to Legal Futures. A spokesman said the number is growing rapidly, with around 20 new applications a day at the moment.

Should the LSB be abolished?
Monday, 14 February 2011Here’s an interesting thought I’ve heard of late: in a few months’ time, will we need the Legal Services Board? The board’s three main purposes were to secure the independence of regulation from representation, set up the Legal Ombudsman, and deliver alternative business structures. The first two of these have been done, with the other due in less than eight months.

Lawyers, accountants, surveyors and others join forces to promote the professions
Tuesday, 8 February 2011The Law Society and Bar Council are among a group of professional bodies which are coming together to improve public and stakeholder appreciation of the contribution made by professionals to society, Legal Futures can reveal. The group – called Professions 4 Good – is to make social mobility and fair access to the professions the priority issue for its initial campaign work when it formally launches in a few weeks’ time.

Three-month extension to insurance should replace ARP, suggests Law Society
Wednesday, 2 February 2011A temporary extension of cover should replace the pooled liability insurers have for struggling law firms, the Law Society has proposed. The extension of existing cover should be for a minimum of three months and its cost based on the current premium.

Value of pro bono work done by private practice solicitors hits £475m
Monday, 31 January 2011Solicitors in private practice undertook pro bono work in 2010 estimated at £475m, a rise of 19% on the year before, Law Society research has found. The figure represents 2.3% of the total gross fee income for private practice last year.

City firms and Law Society back latest initiative to improve social mobility in the law
Sunday, 30 January 2011Three magic circle law firms are among the first to back an online initiative aimed at helping underprivileged youngsters break into the professions. Allen & Overy, Slaughter and May and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer have signed up to accessprofessions.com, a charity website which connects students aged between 13 and 21 with career-enhancing opportunities.

Legal aid specialists not as good as other solicitors, public tells the Law Society
Thursday, 27 January 2011The public believes that legal aid solicitors are not as good as other solicitors, research undertaken for the Law Society has found. Focus groups held in London and Birmingham either side of Christmas also revealed that the public think legal aid solicitors are paid private practice rates.

Law firms can indemnify clients against paying other side’s costs, CA rules
Wednesday, 26 January 2011It is not champertous for a solicitor to indemnify his client against paying the other side’s costs in the event of not finding insurance, the Court of Appeal ruled yesterday. It is thought that law firms may find themselves offering such arrangements more frequently in a post-Jackson/legal aid reform world so as to secure work.
