Solicitors to bear vast bulk of LSB and Legal Ombudsman’s £25m annual running costs
Monday, 1 November 2010Solicitors are set to shoulder the vast majority of the Legal Services Board (LSB) and Legal Ombudsman’s (LeO) £25m annual running costs for the next three years at least, it emerged today. The LSB confirmed that it would proceed with its plan to levy its own £5m costs on the basis of the number of authorised persons overseen by each approved regulator, and most of LeO’s £20m costs based on the number of complaints generated by each group.

LSB on collision course with Law Society and Bar Council over regulators’ lay majorities

The problem with paralegals
Friday, 16 July 2010Monty Python fans will recall the scene from ‘Life of Brian’ involving the People’s Front of Judea, the Judean People’s Front and the Judean Popular People’s Front. Well, it sometimes seems that this inspired those jockeying for position in the paralegal world. We have the National Association of Licensed Paralegals, the Institute of Paralegals and the Society of Specialist Paralegals. Now we have the Law Society potentially moving into their market by investigating whether there is any scope for it to develop a paralegal qualification.

LSB sets out plans for levying its £25m running costs for 2010/11 on profession

Conflict over burden of proof delays SRA’s new powers to fine and rebuke solicitors
Tuesday, 6 April 2010The Legal Services Board has delayed a decision on whether the civil standard of proof should apply to the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s new powers to publicly rebuke and fine solicitors because of concerns raised by the Law Society and Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.
