ICAEW bids to regulate accountant-led ABSs on back of probate rights application
Thursday, 23 June 2011The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) is investigating how it can license accountancy firms to become alternative business structures and provide legal advice to clients, Legal Futures can reveal. The ICAEW is set first to apply for the right to regulate its members to provide reserved probate activities.

PC fee to fall as SRA takes steps to ensure ABSs cannot “manipulate” turnover
Tuesday, 31 May 2011The practising certificate fee is set to fall by 16.7% to £350 in the coming year, it has emerged. The news comes as the Solicitors Regulation Authority should tomorrow approve provisions that will allow it to amend an alternative business structure’s turnover figure – upon which the SRA’s fees will be based – if it feels the number does not reflect the true value of the legal services provided.

MDPs in the spotlight as 12 regulators and professional bodies agree oversight rules

Lawyers, accountants, surveyors and others join forces to promote the professions
Tuesday, 8 February 2011The Law Society and Bar Council are among a group of professional bodies which are coming together to improve public and stakeholder appreciation of the contribution made by professionals to society, Legal Futures can reveal. The group – called Professions 4 Good – is to make social mobility and fair access to the professions the priority issue for its initial campaign work when it formally launches in a few weeks’ time.

Court of Appeal: for Parliament, not courts, to extend legal professional privilege
Wednesday, 13 October 2010The Court of Appeal has today unanimously confirmed that legal professional privilege does not apply to any other professional except solicitors and barristers. It follows a case in which the Law Society and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales intervened on opposite sides.

Chartered accountants eye probate market
Thursday, 7 October 2010Chartered accountants are set to compete with lawyers for probate work after the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) signalled its intention to apply for the right to undertake reserved probate work. An ICAEW survey of 2,500 small practices found that around a quarter were interested in offering the service.
