Survey: law firms’ interest in external investment and ABSs is cooling
Wednesday, 29 June 2011Law firms are reporting diminishing interest in external investment and alternative business structures, a new survey has found. The Legal Services Act Index, produced by Baker Tilly, found that 50% of respondents were considering an outside investor, compared to 60% last autumn.

ABSs increasingly dominating lawyers’ thoughts but profitability is a concern

Neil Kinsella, managing partner of Russell Jones & Walker, said his firm had already begun to draw up a list of potential law firm acquisitions.

We want external capital, says Irwin Mitchell

Susskind: ABSs give UK first mover advantage if firms are up to the challenge
Wednesday, 13 April 2011Lawyers around the world are watching to see how alternative business structures (ABS) work, giving UK law firms a possible competitive advantage if they can meet “unprecedented” client demand for value, Professor Richard Susskind told the Legal Futures Conference. He also said it was “unimaginable” that investors and entrepreneurs would ignore the opportunities presented by legal market.

Law firms keener on external investment as funders’ interest wanes, survey finds
Friday, 8 April 2011As the interest of law firms in external investment goes up, “the interest of funders seems to be firmly in decline”, a new alternative business structures consultancy has found. A survey of 51 of the top 200 law firms by ABS Advisory Partners found that 12% thought it “very likely” or “likely” that they will seek direct external investment.

Army major launches ABS brokerage

He predicts that it will be commoditised practices run along corporate lines that will most likely attract external investment.

Are ABSs coming to America? They may be in North Carolina

Mid-sized City firms likely to be main target of external investors, LSB to predict
Tuesday, 22 February 2011The Legal Services Board (LSB) believes that medium-sized City law firms are likely to be the primary targets for external investors, Legal Futures can reveal. It is one of the predictions in a draft impact assessment of alternative business structures that is still being worked on at the LSB.
