BME solicitors still face disproportionate amount of regulatory action, SRA admits
Friday, 15 July 2011Black and minority ethnic solicitors continue to figure in a disproportionate number of regulatory actions, the Solicitors Regulation Authority has admitted. It is occuring across key areas such as interventions, referrals to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal and the imposition of practising certificate conditions.

£3m scheme to help disadvantaged students into law is “showing results”
Monday, 4 July 2011A groundbreaking scheme aimed at young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in a legal career is helping them with their university ambitions, new figures have shown. Students who have gone through the £3m Pathways to Law scheme are more successful in gaining a place at a top university than a comparator group that has not.

Consumers have benefited from legal reforms but still “lack power”, says report
Friday, 24 June 2011The four years since the Legal Services Act have seen “positive changes” for consumers, but many problems persist, the first ever assessment of the reforms has concluded. The consumer impact report, published today by the Legal Services Consumer Panel, says consumers usually get the outcomes they want and most are happy with the service they receive – although it points out that they have little experience against which to judge this.

Legal Services Board plan risks “outing” gay staff, warns Stonewall
Friday, 20 May 2011Lesbian, gay and bisexual lawyers and staff could be inadvertently “outed” as a result of the Legal Services Board’s plans to increase diversity in the workplace, leading campaign group Stonewall has warned. The charity strongly supported monitoring the sexual orientation of staff but said the board needs to find another way of doing it.

SRA weighing up evidence of insurers discriminating against BME solicitors

Treasury to scrap money laundering offences
Monday, 28 March 2011The government intends to abolish more than 24 regulatory offences under the money laundering regulations, the Treasury has revealed. It is also working with some of the largest City law firms and other major services providers to launch a “log of professional readiness” that will help school leavers and undergraduates prepare to apply for jobs in the City.

SRA: impact of ABSs on small firms may not be as bad as feared
Monday, 7 March 2011Alternative business structures (ABSs) “may not be as big a threat” to small firms as some fear, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has suggested. A draft impact assessment also argued that ABSs could help equality and diversity in the legal profession by breaking the traditional partnership model that has held it back.
