“Bumper years” of negligence claims against solicitors on their way, warns top broker
Monday, 17 January 2011Solicitors are facing “bumper” years of claims for professional negligence as recession-driven legal actions start to bite, a leading broker has warned. The latest High Court figures indicate that negligence claims against solicitors rose from 80 to 210 in 2009, which is more than any other type of professional indemnity claim, and Lockton has predicted that the figure will continue to rise.

Exclusive: leading volume conveyancer goes into administration
Friday, 7 January 2011One of the country’s leading volume conveyancing firms has gone into administration following the abolition of home information packs, Legal Futures can reveal. While Fridays Property Lawyers Ltd – a licensed conveyancing firm which recently began offering probate services too – has been sold in a pre-packaged sale, there have been an unknown number of redundancies.

No decision on will-writer regulation until 2012
Wednesday, 8 December 2010A decision by the Legal Services Board (LSB) on whether will-writing should become a regulated activity will not be made until 2012, it emerged today. The LSB’s draft business plan 2011/12, published today for consultation, revealed that the board is also considering what it calls a “deep dive” investigation of conveyancing.

Land Registry to change rules to ensure ABSs can compete with law firms

Lenders “dislike” separate representation of borrowers but investigate guidance
Wednesday, 10 November 2010The Council of Mortgage Lenders has launched an investigation into the impact of more borrowers and lenders having separate legal representation as lenders continue to restrict their panels, it has emerged. It has also given a cautious welcome to the Law Society’s new conveyancing quality scheme and sounded a warning over suggestions that the requirements of solicitors’ professional indemnity insurance will be relaxed.

India outsourcer sets up in Manchester as LPO focus shifts to PI and conveyancing
Monday, 25 October 2010Indian outsourcing company Mangalam Information Technologies has set up an office in Manchester as it explores the opportunities for legal process outsourcing (LPO) in the UK, including “low hanging fruits” such as personal injury (PI) and conveyancing work. It comes as UK-based LPO providers estimated that they could reduce transactional costs in PI by up to 30%.
