In-deed “could take minority stakes” in its panel law firms post-ABS

Rightmove founder vows to dominate online conveyancing market in three years

Rising fraud means open conveyancing panels are at an end, warns CML chief
Friday, 13 May 2011The growth of property fraud means that lenders’ open panels of conveyancing firms are at an end, the director-general of the Council of Mortgage Lenders has warned. Michael Coogan added that lenders remain unsure about the impact of the Conveyancing Quality Scheme.

SRA poised to mystery shop conveyancing firms over fees and publicity
Thursday, 21 April 2011The Solicitors Regulation Authority could “mystery shop” conveyancing firms to check whether their costs information and publicity about charges are misleading, it has revealed. At the same time, the Legal Services Board announced that it is to consider a major review of conveyancing.

SRA approves new conflicts rule as it prepares to publish 563-page Handbook
Monday, 21 March 2011The Solicitors Regulation Authority has substantially reworked its new rule on conflicts of interest, which will come into force later this year. Legal Futures has had advanced sight of the 563-page SRA Handbook ahead of its publication on 6 April, although the new Code of Conduct is just 54 pages.

Revealed: nearly 350 firms apply for Conveyancing Quality Scheme
Wednesday, 23 February 2011Some 342 law firms have applied to join the Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) since it opened last month, the Law Society has revealed to Legal Futures. A spokesman said the number is growing rapidly, with around 20 new applications a day at the moment.

Mayson: expand list of reserved legal activities
Thursday, 10 February 2011Conveyancing, immigration advice, preparing wills and powers of attorney, and estate administration should all become reserved legal activities, a leading thinktank has recommended. However, the report from the Legal Services Institute – headed by Professor Stephen Mayson – says this work should not be the sole preserve of the legally qualified.

Licensed conveyancers on top as Land Registry figures expose “cottage industry”
Tuesday, 8 February 2011The fragmented nature of the conveyancing market has been laid bare by figures showing that nearly a third of the 9,000 legal practices which registered dealings with the Land Registry last year handled 10 or fewer transfers. While MyHomeMove made almost 10,000 applications for transfers in 2010, 834 firms only made one application the whole 12 months, according to Land Registry figures.
