SRA mulls making firms that want to hold client money seek permission
Tuesday, 8 January 2013The Solicitors Regulation Authority giving solicitors positive permission to hold client money is one of the options it will consider as part of the review of conveyancing, it has emerged. It has also expressed concern about mortgage lenders using solicitors as an insurance policy against problems.

LSB urges conveyancing regulators to consider alternatives to client account
Tuesday, 18 December 2012Regulators should explore alternatives to conveyancers holding client money in a bid to tackle the risks of fraud, the Legal Services Board has recommended. However, it found regulators are working hard at the issue and that it need not intervene any further.

Home-buyers have little interest in conveyancing from brand names, says survey

CA clears law firm of £185,000 mortgage fraud liability after being duped by bogus practice
Thursday, 13 December 2012The Court of Appeal has reversed a ruling that held a solicitors’ firm caught up in a mortgage fraud liable for the loss after being tricked by a bogus practice. The High Court had ruled that Davisons Solicitors in Birmingham had to repay £184,500 to the Nationwide Building Society.

Ombudsman warns of dangers of ABS conveyancing factories putting volume over service

Conveyancers reject Law Society call for referral fee ban
Monday, 10 December 2012The Council for Licensed Conveyancers has rejected Law Society calls for a ban on referral fees in conveyancing, although it is proposing to increase the disclosure requirements on firms. It found “little evidence of significant detriment” to consumers.
