MPs call for wider referral fee ban and power to force data audits of law firms

The ticking bomb of referral fees
Wednesday, 12 October 2011There is an interesting game of pass the parcel going on over referral fees right now – made more interesting by the fact that the parcel is ticking loudly. The Ministry of Justice wants paying referral fees to be a regulatory offence, while the regulators want it to be a criminal offence – nobody wants the blame when the ban proves impossible to enforce.

Referral fee debate rages as Ford figures show accident victims don’t proactively claim

Phone hacking “obscures bigger issue” of lawyers, CMCs and others trading in data
Thursday, 21 July 2011Parliament needs to tackle lawyers, claims management companies (CMCs) and others trading in illegally obtained personal data “rather than obsessing” about phone hacking, the Information Commissioner claimed yesterday. Meanwhile, the Financial Ombudsman Service has accused some CMCs of providing a “second-rate” and even “shocking” service.

Claims management companies see income soar to £581m

Seriously injured and disabled could suffer under Jackson reforms, MPs warn
Tuesday, 28 June 2011The Jackson reforms could “impact negatively on some of the most seriously injured or disabled claimants”, an influential committee of MPs has warned. It also called for a review of the regulation of claims management companies amid concerns about their role in clinical negligence claims.
