SRA under pressure to ban solicitors from offering cash inducements to bring claims

Claims company reveals plan to become ABS
Monday, 28 February 2011A car accident claims manager has revealed its intention to become an alternative business structure, Legal Futures can report. Hampshire-based Vamco, which specialises in repair management and credit hire, is planning to take over a branch office of Nesbit Law Group, which is currently located in the same building under the name Kingsley Law.

CMCs face cash-call after regulator suffers major budget shortfall
Tuesday, 15 February 2011A shortfall in the funding of claims management company (CMC) regulation – due to escalating enforcement action and a contraction in the size of the industry – has led to a cash call this month on the 3,000-plus businesses in England and Wales.

Crackdown on PI advertising begins
Thursday, 23 December 2010The crackdown on personal injury advertising started today as the Ministry of Justice unveiled plans to ban inducements to bring a claim. The current rules for claims management companies only ban the offer of “immediate” cash payments or similar benefits, but a consultation issued today proposes extending that to all inducements for making a claim.

Cabinet backs Young; peer favours referral fee ban; MoJ to extend claims process
Friday, 15 October 2010The Cabinet has given its backing to Lord Young’s blueprint to reform health and safety and curb the excesses of the compensation culture, the peer revealed today. He also expressed a desire to see an end to referral fees and said the Ministry of Justice had agreed to extend the road traffic accident claims process to other areas of personal injury.

Regulator announces crackdown on CMCs cold-calling and taking up-front fees
