Barristers move towards ABS, survey says
Thursday, 19 June 2014Nearly one in five criminal and family barristers are considering joining alternative business structures with non-lawyer owners and four out of ten plan to apply, or are thinking of applying, for authorisation to conduct litigation, according to a major survey.

‘Direct access chambers’ opens for business and lands group action

Online barrister service hits crowdfunding target as Stobart demise “clears way”
Tuesday, 27 May 2014Online barrister service myBarrister last week exceeded its target of raising £150,000 through crowd-funding. It has now raised more than £163,000 in just over two months from 65 individual investors – the largest of whom has put in £50,000.

High Court rejects challenge to BSB disciplinary tribunals
Thursday, 17 October 2013A High Court judgment that refused three applications for judicial review of barristers’ disciplinary decisions is to be appealed, after the court found that anomalies in tribunal panel member appointments did not affect the validity of the findings.

Reform agenda to create “two-tier Bar”, with bulk of chambers to suffer

Bar Council and Law Society at loggerheads as standard terms of contract come into force
Thursday, 31 January 2013Barristers could end up uninsured and in financial hardship if they agree to variations of their new standard terms of contract recommended by the Law Society, the Bar Council has warned. It said it was “surprised and disappointed” at the tone of Chancery Lane’s practice note.
