LSB joins solicitors in questioning government’s criminal advocacy plans

Direct access service winning work mostly from solicitors and other barristers
Thursday, 12 November 2015Clerksroom Direct, which has over 1,000 direct access barristers on its books, has said that only around only 20% of its recent cases have come directly from members of the public. Half came from law firms and the rest from barristers’ chambers.

Barrister sets up BSB-regulated firm to work for City solicitors
Friday, 4 September 2015A barrister has set up a limited company, regulated by the Bar Standards Board, to work as a consultant for a leading City law firm. Jane Walshe said she was the first barrister to be authorised to work in this way.

‘List of defaulting solicitors’ to be ditched but cab-rank rule set to survive
Monday, 27 July 2015The Bar Standards Board is to dispense with its ‘list of defaulting solicitors’ and replace it with a new rule allowing barristers to refuse work under the cab-rank rule where there is an “unacceptable risk” that they will not get paid.

Bar lifts the lid on shocking sexism faced by female barristers

Wednesday, 22 July 2015An equal gender balance among practising barristers is “unlikely ever to be achieved” if current trends continue, a Bar Council report has warned. However, there was better news on BAME representation, which is due to hit 20%.

RateMyBarrister becomes legalbods.com
Wednesday, 22 July 2015First he allowed solicitors to join, now the founder of RateMyBarrister is relaunching the website as legalbods.com, because “people who need legal advice often ask if anyone knows any good ‘legal bods'”. William Rees said his focus was on obtaining more detailed data from clients.

Bar Council joins forces with northern barristers to launch “go-to website” for direct access
Monday, 22 June 2015The Bar Council has joined forces with the two Preston-based barristers behind the Direct Access Portal to relaunch it as the “go-to website” for consumers looking for a barrister. The portal will replace the Bar Council’s existing direct access register.

Tax fraud barrister loses appeal against confiscation order
Thursday, 7 May 2015Michael Stannard, a former barrister convicted of cheating the public revenue of over £3m, has failed in his latest attempt to challenge a confiscation order made against him. The judge said she had “formed the clear impression” that he was “wholly unrepentant”.

Number of QCs continues to fall
Tuesday, 5 May 2015The number of QCs is continuing to fall, statistics from the Bar Standard Board have shown, dropping by more than 200 in four years. This contrasts with the steady rise in the total number of practicing barristers.
