“Golden age” of Bar is over but chambers that embrace business can still thrive
Monday, 20 September 2010The “golden age” is over for barristers as the Bar faces falling income and shrinking numbers, a new report has claimed. However, the Bar still has “an enormous amount in its favour”, according to leading legal consultancy Jomati, which also found evidence of a correlation between the best-performing sets and large numbers of QCs and marketing staff.

BSB to focus on four key areas of compliance as it rolls out chambers monitoring
Friday, 17 September 2010Every chambers in England and Wales is to be quizzed on their approach to equality and diversity as part of a new monitoring scheme being rolled out by the Bar Standards Board. The 791 chambers (of which 391 are registered as sole practitioners) are also to face questions on how they handle complaints, their policies on pupillage, and compliance with anti-money laundering rules.

Exclusive: barristers want to conduct litigation and join forces with solicitors
Tuesday, 18 May 2010A majority of barristers think they should be able to conduct litigation whether they are working inside “entities”, such as law firms, or whether they are self-employed, according to emerging findings from the Bar Standards Board’s survey of the profession. There was also a majority in favour of extending public access.

Revealed: the first barrister partner

BSB fires warning shot over SRA regulation

LSB tells bar regulator to up its game
Thursday, 1 April 2010The Legal Services Board has told barristers’ regulator that it will need to up its game – and perhaps embrace outcomes-focused regulation – to keep pace with liberalisation of the bar. “We expect that the BSB will invest in its skills and regulatory capacity,” it said.
