Bar Council chief urges barristers to embrace direct instructions from the public

Government rejects profession’s call for convictions check on all ABS partners
Thursday, 20 October 2011The government has rejected a call from the legal profession that partners in alternative business structures should have to disclose all convictions and cautions, even if spent. But the SRA is still on track to start licensing ABSs in early 2012.

Education and training review “may not report until 2013”, Potter admits
Monday, 17 October 2011The legal education and training review, commissioned by the three main frontline legal regulators in November 2010, may not produce its final report until some point in 2013, it has emerged. Meanwhile, the academic body contracted to provide research has shut down, but the work will continue.

QASA set for April as regulators prepare for judges not doing their bit

Controversial advocacy scheme now faces delay, regulators admit

Don’t comply, don’t die
Wednesday, 5 October 2011Amid the excitement of ABSs going live, in a small way, and the Legal Ombudsman’s first birthday, I have been keeping an eye on the third limb of the Legal Services Board’s initial three priorities for its first three years – ensuring the independence of regulation within those approved regulators where there is also a representative function. With both the Law Society and Bar Council still non-compliant with its rules, it is not a story that reflects very well on the LSB.

BSB: legal aid cuts drive “unprecedented increase” in complaints by litigants in person
Tuesday, 27 September 2011Complaints against barristers by litigants-in-person (LiPs) forced by legal aid cuts to represent themselves have continued to spike, according to the Bar Standards Board. It has received as many complaints from LiPs in the first half of 2011 as it did in 2009 and 2010 combined.

Bar Council fails governance test again while Law Society goes to the wire

QASA under pressure with sudden move to pilot scheme and barristers up in arms
