Bar Council and Inns: Cut training cost by allowing students to learn the law how they want
Friday, 2 December 2016A model of training barristers that would split the Bar professional training course into two – allowing students to learn procedure and evidence however they want before undergoing compulsory skills training – has been put forward by the Bar Council and Council of the Inns of Court as an alternative to the regulator’s plans for training reform.

High Court rejects solicitor’s bid to judicially review Bar Standards Board
Thursday, 29 September 2016A solicitor who made multiple complaints against two barristers who acted for the claimant in litigation in which he was a defendant, has failed in an application to judicially review the Bar Standards Board’s (BSB) decision to dismiss the complaints.

Bar Council raises fundamental concerns about CPD scheme shortly before launch
Tuesday, 6 September 2016The Bar Council has slammed the Bar Standards Board’s forthcoming continuing professional development regime as being burdensome, complicated, unfit for purpose, and involving “pointless” self-assessment. It warned that the scheme would lead to “many practitioners” being “likely to fail in their compliance”.

QC forms his own law firm to “modernise access to barrister services”
Thursday, 1 September 2016A leading white collar crime barrister said this week that he may conduct straightforward litigation through his new Bar Standards Board-authorised entity. Bright Line Law, launched this week, is the brainchild of Jonathan Fisher QC and was devised in part as an attempt to bring together the various strands of his activities.

New ABS rules will smooth path for group structures and private equity, says SRA

Almost half of female barristers have experienced discrimination, major report finds
Tuesday, 12 July 2016Almost half of female barristers have experienced discrimination at work and 40% have experienced harassment, a major report by the Bar Standards Board has found. Dr Vanessa Davies, director general of the BSB, described the findings as “very disappointing”.

Barrister who overturned disbarment at Court of Appeal is disbarred again
Monday, 13 June 2016A barrister who overturned his disbarment at the Court of Appeal last year has been disbarred again. Damian McCarthy was found by a Bar disciplinary tribunal to have forged client care letters, after a direct access client complained.

Dual-qualified barrister disbarred 10 years after being struck off as solicitor
Friday, 27 May 2016A barrister turned solicitor has been disbarred 10 years after he was struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. He did not tell the Bar about the decision and the Bar Standards Board only became aware of it last year when Lloyd Aneke applied for restoration to the roll of solicitors.

Barrister loses appeal over costs award after successfully defending herself at Bar tribunal
Friday, 27 May 2016The Court of Appeal has upheld a ruling that a barrister who successfully defended herself in disciplinary proceedings should not be paid costs at the £120 hourly rate allowed by a tribunal-appointed assessor. But it upheld the basic principle that barristers in such situations can claim their costs at a rate higher than that of a normal litigant-in-person.
