City solicitors strike deal with commercial Bar over special terms of business
Friday, 1 February 2013The City of London Law Society and Commercial Bar Association have published model terms of business for barristers instructed in commercial cases after more than two years of negotiation. The Bar Council’s new standard terms were deemed unacceptable by some solicitors.

Bar Council and Law Society at loggerheads as standard terms of contract come into force
Thursday, 31 January 2013Barristers could end up uninsured and in financial hardship if they agree to variations of their new standard terms of contract recommended by the Law Society, the Bar Council has warned. It said it was “surprised and disappointed” at the tone of Chancery Lane’s practice note.

Law Society hits out at 'inadequate' client-care rules in Bar's new public access training
Wednesday, 30 January 2013The Bar Standards Board’s plans to strengthen public access training for newly qualified barristers in client care are inadequate and should include extensive supervision to ensure competence as is required of trainee solicitors, according to the Law Society.

“Illogical and not in the public interest”: Bar chief attacks QASA as solicitors join show of unity
Monday, 28 January 2013The Quality Assurance Scheme for Advocates is illogical in its treatment of QCs and does not serve the public interest by allowing solicitors to act as plea-only advocates, the chairman of the Bar Council has argued. The claims come as the bodies representing criminal law solicitors and barristers united in calling for a halt to the scheme.

Clash over whether Delhi rape case proves continuing need for cab-rank rule

Government closes door on accountants' last hope to change privilege rule

Chambers sign up to escrow account pilot after FSA gives green light
Thursday, 10 January 2013Ten chambers have signed up to the pilot of Barco, the Bar Council’s third-party escrow account that will allow barristers to handle client money. It follows the Financial Services Authority granting regulatory approval for the service under the Payment Services Regulations.

Barrister snub to diversity monitoring “embarrassing” and “pathetic”

New Bar chief keeps up anti-LSB rhetoric

Fire and brimstone
Thursday, 15 November 2012It has been a week of strong words. First of all we had Bar Council chairman Michael Todd QC sounding off about the Legal Services Board, and then on Tuesday Solicitors Regulation Authority chairman Charles Plant was uncompromising about his view of the “small but significant” number of solicitors who are not good enough to be in practice. Let’s start with Mr Plant, who does like to drop the occasional grenade to liven things up. In some ways it is hardly controversial to suggest that out of nearly 130,000 practising solicitors, there are some bad apples – but the problem appears a lot bigger than that.
