Putting the LSB back in its box
Wednesday, 4 April 2012If we are to judge the success of a regulator by the degree to which it really annoys those it regulates, then the Legal Services Board (LSB) has done an absolutely bang-up job these past three years. It is just over 12 months since I first blogged about whispers questioning the long-term need for the LSB once independent regulation, the Legal Ombudsman and alternative business structures were all up and running. Well, they are whispers no more.

Set the date to scrap the LSB, Bar regulator tells government
Wednesday, 4 April 2012The “end is in sight” for the Legal Services Board (LSB) and it can be abolished in about three years’ time, the Bar’s regulator has told the government. The Bar Council stopped short of this, but said the LSB should be reined in.

Bar Council attacks “overconfident” Legal Services Board for “super-regulator” ambitions
Wednesday, 21 March 2012The Bar Council has attacked the Legal Services Board’s “overconfidence” and criticised its apparent desire to become a “super-regulator” rather than an oversight body. It said the LSB’s plans has ambitions to be involved in areas of activity where it should not be.

Government backs social mobility toolkit for lawyers and other professionals
Monday, 5 March 2012The government has welcomed the first common framework to measure the progress of social mobility within the professions, which was launched last Friday. The social mobility toolkit was published by Professions for Good.

Undercover police officer scandal "highlights need for greater protection of legal privilege"
Monday, 6 February 2012The government last week rejected a Bar Council-inspired bid to protect lawyer-client conversations from covert police surveillance where legal professional privilege is not being abused in furtherance of a criminal purpose. However, the Bar Council has vowed to press on with its campaign.

"Pessimistic" barristers lukewarm about ABSs
Wednesday, 1 February 2012Barristers are showing only “cautious interest” in alternative business structures, although they are keener on barrister-only entities, according to a major survey released yesterday. It also found a “worrying lack of optimisim” in the profession.

LSB, Bar Council and big law firms sign up to Clegg’s ‘Business Compact’ on social mobility
Thursday, 12 January 2012The Legal Services Board, Bar Council and 10 top law firms have signed the government’s ‘Business Compact’ on social mobility to end the “who you know, not what you know” culture, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced.

5% Solution Group set to meet Lodder over demand to cut Bar Council costs

Bar Council accuses solicitors over referral fee pressure and "abuse"
Friday, 16 December 2011Some solicitors are putting barristers under “increasing pressure” to enter into referral fee arrangements, while others are trying to take “improper advantage” of advocates by abusing the ‘one case, one fee’ rules in criminal work, the Bar Council has complained.

Bar Council and economists call on government to support contingent legal aid fund
Wednesday, 14 December 2011A contingent legal aid fund (CLAF) has merit but its viability cannot be assessed until the Jackson reforms settle down, a Bar Council-commissioned report has concluded. Consultants Europe Economics, backed by the Bar Council, called on the government to back the concept.
