Bar Council steps up war of words with Legal Services Board

ABSs – a case of tortoise v hare?
Monday, 5 November 2012It has now been 12 months since the formal introduction of alternative business structures (ABSs) by the Legal Services Act 2007. Prior to the reform being introduced, speculation about the effects such radical changes would have was rife. In particular, those pessimistic about the changes lamented the undermining of the legal profession via the introduction of so-called ‘Tesco Law’, combined with the ringing of the death knell for the high street firm as we currently know it.

Lloyds to take minority stake in defendant firm after SRA approves ABS application

Wednesday, 31 October 2012The government has rejected the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s bid to increase the amount it can fine law firms from £2,000 to £250m, Legal Futures can reveal. The SRA had wanted its powers to penalise ‘traditional’ firms to match those it already has for ABSs.
