BSB sticks to its guns on limited ABS licensing

BSB reveals low expectations of ABS take-up

Pure Legal announces first purchase of law firm, buying Pryers for £13m
Thursday, 10 December 2015Pure Legal, the alternative business structure set up by former head of Quindell Legal Services Phil Hodgkinson, has announced its first purchase of a law firm. Pure has bought Pryers, a medical negligence specialist based in York, for £13m.

Coming soon to Asda? Canadian firm based in Walmart stores plans rapid expansion
Thursday, 10 December 2015A Canadian law firm which runs offices inside Walmart supermarkets is planning to almost double in size next year, it has emerged. Mark Morris, co-founder of Axess Law, said the firm could potentially expand into the USA and the UK.

Soldier turned solicitor sets up ABS with former special forces officer
Friday, 4 December 2015A soldier turned solicitor has set up an alternative business structure with a former special forces officer. Proelium Law aims to provide commercial law, international law and security advice to businesses and other organisations wanting to operate in conflict zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Government promises to clear way for supermarket and estate agent ABSs
Monday, 30 November 2015The government said today that it will “further reduce barriers” to make it easier for alternative business structures, such as supermarkets and estate agents, to offer legal services like conveyancing, probate and litigation. It will also seek the complete separation of regulators from representative bodies.

Income plummets by 24% as BSB regulates smaller than expected number of firms
Monday, 30 November 2015The Bar Standards Board has reported that its annual income is expected to plummet by almost a quarter (24%) by the end of this financial year, with the smaller than expected number of firms or ‘entities’ that had sought its oversight contributing significantly to the shortfall.

Exclusive: Royal College of Nursing prepares to follow BMA in setting up law firm
Tuesday, 24 November 2015The Royal College of Nursing is planning to follow the British Medical Association in setting up a law firm, it has emerged. Like the BMA, the RCN – which represents over 400,000 nurses – has chosen Cardiff-based NewLaw as its partner.

Under new management
Thursday, 19 November 2015Lawyers got something of a dressing down last week from Rocket Lawyer boss Mark Edwards. Mr Edwards said lawyers were not “great innovators” and not much would change while most firms were run entirely by lawyers. He was speaking in a small, cramped room in a basement of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills – possibly reflecting the BIS view of legal services, but hopefully not.

Top 20 accountants expands commercial law services as City practice evolves with accountancy arm
Wednesday, 18 November 2015Top 20 accountancy firm Kingston Smith is expanding its commercial law services, the firm’s new head of legal services has said. Meanwhile, City firm Bates Wells Braithwaite, which became an alternative business structure last year to bring in an accountant to provide non-legal services, is evolving into a firm of business advisers, its managing partner said.
