2024 was a dynamic year in the M&A legal market place.

While headline-grabbing mega-deals were absent, firms focused on mergers and acquisitions to expand their regional reach, strengthen core practice areas, and enhance client offerings.

We saw over 150 transactions—a significant rise from the previous year—as bolt-ons, consolidations, and private equity-backed deals reshaped the legal landscape. At times, it felt like a gold rush as firms raced to capitalise on emerging opportunities.

Looking ahead to 2025, consolidation is set to pick up even more pace. With more buyers than sellers, competition for attractive targets will intensify. Acquisitions aimed at bolstering specific practice capabilities are now seen as a strategic necessity rather than a gamble.

Private equity continues to play a pivotal role, with investors eyeing scalable, high-margin mid-tier and boutique firms.

However, challenges remain:
🔹 Succession gaps
🔹 Cultural clashes
🔹 Regulatory constraints
🔹 Limited buyer pools

Client loyalty tied to key partners and the traditional partnership structure further complicate exits. But for those ready to overcome these hurdles, the opportunities are immense.

Fortune, as they say, favours the brave.

We are also excited to share deeper insights in our upcoming whitepaper on private equity in the legal sector, launching on 30 January.
