Hoowla case management software journey into the Canadian market


hoowlaIt has been just over a month since Hoowla case management software Managing Director Adam Curtis and Lead Developer, Edd Turtle, travelled to Toronto, Canada, to participate in a week-long integrator program hosted by Innovate UK and Toronto Metropolitan Universities Legal Innovation Zone.

That week, Adam and Edd learned about the Canadian legal system from industry specialists. They also met with Ontario’s Bar Association to gain insight into how the legal environment is structured and regulated. Marking the first step in taking Hoowla international their aim was to learn how to bring UK-developed case management software to the Canadian and North American markets.

Since returning, Adam has had time to reflect on his first experience in Canada and noted the marked similarities and differences between the UK and Canadian legal industry. Points that he highlights are the notable differences observed in the regulation of legal activities. In the UK, activities such as the right of audience, litigation conduct, probate, and notarial duties are strictly reserved for authorised professionals under centralised bodies like the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB). This centralised regulation ensures uniform standards across England and Wales.

In contrast, Canada operates with a decentralised regulatory structure where each province and territory maintains its own regulatory body. This variation allows for adaptations to local legal needs. Still, it can also lead to differences in licensing requirements and regulatory practices from one jurisdiction to another.

Adam recognises these differences as pivotal considerations as Hoowla plans its international expansion, particularly in navigating the regulatory frameworks needed for entering the Canadian market effectively.

Whilst the week was packed with memorable learning experiences and networking opportunities. One of the highlights for Adam was attending a mixer at the British Embassy and meeting with the Ontario Bar Association. It felt like a step forward in understanding British exports and learning about the expectations of the Bar Association for new legal technology entering the industry.

Adam says, “Being in the market and attending structured meetings arranged by LIZ and Innovate UK really speed up the learning process about the legal industry in Canada. I look forward to the next trip in November, where I hope to meet even more law firms in Ontario.”

Before returning to Canada in November, Adam is determined to continue his research on the Canadian legal industry, establish a network of contacts, and engage with law firms to receive their feedback on Hoowla as a platform.
